Ministry of Truth
Minitrue
The Ministry of Truth is the manufacturer of truth throughout Oceania. It is also known as Minitrue in Newspeak and is the ministry where all documents, newspapers, books, movies, plays, and record are modified to reflect the truth of the Party. Once a worker fixes an issue in a historical record, all of the original copies are burnt and replaced. The Party is always right, Big Brother is always right. The Ministry of Truth helps establish this and the employees make sure to correct records to make them right. This ministry building is a huge pyramidal structure of glittering white concrete that is 300 meters tall with over 3000 rooms above the ground and even more rooms underground where the incinerators take care of the inaccurate documents. The departments in the Ministry of Truth are the Records Department, the Fiction Department, the Tele-programmes Department and the Pornography section, which is exclusively only for the proles.
“Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past. ”
The Ministry of Truth is dedicated to maintaining the authority of the Party. By controlling the knowledge about historical events in the past, the Party can prosper and make sure everyone knows the past as what we rewrite in our ministry.
“It was true that there was no such person as Comrade Ogilvy, but a few lines of print and a couple of faked photographs would soon bring him into existence. ”
Winston Smith is dedicated to helping create truth in Oceania and is easily able to help fix the inaccuracies in a newspaper article by bringing into life someone new. This helps to create the truth and maintain the power of the Party.
“The Party member, like the proletarian, tolerates present-day conditions because he has no standards of comparison. He must be cut off from the past ... because it is necessary for him to believe that he is better off than his ancestors and that the average level of material comfort is constantly rising. ”
The Ministry of Truth prevents the collapse Oceanian society by doctoring old documents. If everyone is cut off from the reality of the past, then promises can be seemingly kept and a constant facade of the rise of living conditions can be maintained to keep the social structure of Oceania.
