The Ministry of Plenty is in control of the planned economy of Oceania. It has jurisdiction over the rationing of food, supplies, and goods. The ministry keeps the people of Oceania producing useless and synthetic supplies and weapons to be used in the perpetual war. People do not have access to means of production since it is controlled by the Party. The Ministry of Truth helps to create a facade of economic growth to praise the Party while in reality the population is kept poor.
“Goods must be produced, but they must not be distributed. ”
The Ministry of Plenty ensures that production of goods creates constant labor and economic growth yet is only distributed to the top 2% of society.
“Most of the material that you were dealing with had no connection with anything in the real world, not even the kind of connection that is contained in a direct lie. Statistics were just as much a fantasy in their original version as in their rectified version ”
When Winston is replacing statistic from the Ministry of Plenty, it becomes clear that the statistics are just a fantasy and that they are only there to make people believe the economic growth and have no significant connection to the real world, even when they are not being made up.
